Father Son, Mother Daughter/Member Junior Tournaments At Foxborough CC - MASSGOLF

Foxborough CC hosts Father Son & Mother Daughter/Member Junior Tournaments

FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts (August 13, 2025) — There are few joys in golf more meaningful than teeing it up with family or watching young players share the course with a mentor or role model.

That spirit was on full display on Tuesday and Wednesday at Foxborough Country Club, which hosted both the Massachusetts Father Son Tournament and the Massachusetts Mother Daughter/Member Junior Tournament. Each tournament used a Modified Scotch format, where both golfers hit their tee shots and select which drive they want to use. They then play alternate shots into the hole.

The Western Mass tandem of Al Alminas (Franconia/Veterans Golf Course) and his son Peter Alminas (GreatHorse) have teamed up to compete in this event since Peter’s college days in the mid-2000s, and on Tuesday they blitzed the field, shooting 9-under-par 63 to win their first title together in the Senior Division.

“We’ve been playing a long time, and seems like we’ve gotten better and better score-wise,” Peter said. “We play 2-3 times per year, and playing with him is fun, so to win it together, it’s nice to share.”

All day long, Peter said he was able to drive it well, leaving his father within 100-150 yards of most greens on the par-4s.  They started the round with four birdies on the first five holes to fire 31 on the front and further separating from the back with a birdie on the par-3 12th, followed by four consecutive circles to finish out the round.

“I was looking at the scores, and I didn’t say anything because we just wanted to finish it off well,” Peter said. “The format just fit what we’re both good at.”

After a birdie-free opening stretch, defending champions Steve Tasho and Steve Tasho Jr., of Thorny Lea Golf Club, knocked down four consecutive birdies on holes 14-17, but finished 2-under total. David R. Pierce (Thorny Lea Golf Club) and his son David Pierce (Oakley Country Club), who played with the Alminas duo, shot 1-under total for third.

For Will Keyser and his son Sam Keyser, the Massachusetts Father Son Tournament at Foxborough Country Club has become a family tradition, and a winning one at that. The Charles River Country Club duo captured the Junior Division title for the second year in a row, sealing the victory with a clutch finish.

Sitting at 1-under through 12 holes, Sam drove the green on the par-4 13th and made a 10-foot birdie putt. On the 16th, Will left his approach from 92 yards just 10 feet under the cup, and Sam calmly rolled it in to get to the winning mark of 3-under-par 69.

“We made both of our putts inside 10 feet coming in, and Sam drained a six-footer on 18,” Will said. “To go back-to-back is very special. It’s a fun event, and we enjoy the golf course immensely.”

Sam, a rising senior at Xaverian Brothers High School, thrived on Foxborough’s shot-shaping demands. With Will often hitting it between 250-260 safely in the fairway, Sam was able to take some more chances off the tee.

After going birdie-free through six holes, Will put his drive safely down the middle, opening up Sam to take a 3-wood over the trees, which was just 260 to the front. Will then rolled in a 40-footer to get them to 2-under.

“Our past few events this summer haven’t been what we wanted,” Sam said. “So to perform under pressure and go back-to-back means a lot.”

Joseph Mooney and Ronan Mooney, of Worcester Country Club made eagle on both the 9th and 13th holes and finished with a birdie on 18, but came up one stroke shy of the champions. Garrett Whitney and Connor Whitney, of Presidents Golf Course, birdied the last two holes to finish solo third at 1-under.

Mother Daughter/Member Junior

The Welch family name is all over the trophy for Mass Golf’s Mother Daughter/Member Junior trophy, but on Wednesday, they took it to another level.

Tracy Welch (Winchester Country Club) has won the overall title with her mother Jane Faxon Welch, and with her daughter Amanda Adams. This time, Welch lifted the trophy with her daughter Victoria Adams, as the pair shot 6-over-par 78 to cruise to victor at Foxborough. The pair made a birdie on the par-5 9th and another on the par-3 17th.

After the victory, Tracy rushed up to the Massachusetts Women’s Amateur at Concord Country Club to caddie for her other daughter Amanda Adams, who found herself in the Round of 16 after winning her morning match.

“It was incredibly special to play,” said Welch, a two-time Massachusetts Women’s Amateur winner (1998, 2006). “Victoria and I had won the junior division, but we really wanted to get our name on the same bowl, so it’s very cool to be on it with three different people and then get a call from Amanda that she’d won her first match, and I was needed on the bag.”

First Tee — Massachusetts participant Olivia Jatczak also earned her name on the trophy for the fourth consecutive year, as she teamed with Kerry Dolan (Pocasset Golf Club) to shoot 9-over 81 that included an eagle on the par-5 16th (414 yards), plus a birdie on the par-4 13th.

In the Junior Division (daughters 18 years or younger), Maureen Sullivan (Renaissance) and her daughter Lynn Sullivan (Thomson Country Club) earned the title with a score of 91.

Renee Handerhan & Karen Marcos, of Segregansett Country Club, won the Net Division in the Senior Division with a score of even-par 72.
