Qualifying began this week for the 106th Massachusetts Junior Amateur Championship Powered by KOHR Golf. A total of 22 players across four events guaranteed their spot in the Championship Proper, which will be held from August 4-August 7 at Franklin Country Club.
The event is open to any amateur golfers (ages 18 & under through August 7, 2025) who have an active Mass Golf Membership. Handicap Index® not exceeding 12.0 (at the time of registration).
On Monday, Agawam Municipal Golf Course hosted the Massachusetts Junior Amateur Qualifier. The field held 31 competitors, all vying for a spot in the Junior Amateur Championship.
Leading the pack was Jake Doherty (Sterling National Golf Club), with four birdies in his last four holes to shoot a smooth 6-under-par 65. In solo second was Josiah Wang (Youth on Course), with two birdies to start out his round and two more in the last three holes to close his round out with a 5-under-par 66.
Shawn Amari (Northern Spy Country Club) and Connor Henrey (Springfield Country Club) tied for third, carding a 3-under-par 68. Amari started off quick, with a birdie on the first hole. He held his own through the scorecard, earning five more birdies throughout the round.
With a three-way tie for second place on Tuesday, the Junior Amateur qualifying at Cape Ann Golf Club was a close race. Due to the extreme heat conditions, the players only competed through the first 9 holes.
At the top of the leaderboard was Terrence Manning (MIAA), with an even-par score of 34. Following him was Cole Velardo (Ferncroft Country Club), Zach Enners (Indian Ridge Country Club), Tommy Murphy (Bradford Country Club), and Jack Burnham (Bellevue Golf Club) at a score of 1-over-par 35.
Players proved they could go low on Wednesday, with qualifying scores in the 60s at Green Harbor Golf Club. Joey Dacosta (Mass Golf Golf Course) and Adrian Daigle (Nashawtuc Country Club) tied for first at a 3-under-par 68. Tied for third with a 2-under-par 69 were Jack Moriarty (Ferncroft Country Club), Tiger Zhang (MIAA), Glen Murdough (Concord Country Club), James Crispi (MIAA), Chase Thomas (Mass Golf GC), and Asher Graff (Mass Golf GC).
On Thursday at the Bayberry Hills Links Course, Jack Carew (Ipswich Country Club) made birdie on the par-5 8th both times around the course to earn a share of the top score at 2-under 70. Sandwich native Blaise Chatigny (The Ridge Club) also shot 70 to finish one stroke ahead of Grayson Bohane (Cohasset Golf Club).
While Max. St. Aubin (Mass Golf GC) had a relatively smooth round of 74, which featured 16 pars. In contrast, his Nauset High School teammate, Oliver Smith (Barnstable Golf), had a rollercoaster day. After shooting 6-over 42 on the front nine, Smith turned it around with a bogey-free 32 on the second nine with consecutive birdies on the 4th and 5th holes and the 7th and 8th.
