Four of the six qualifying events for the 2025 Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championships took place this week in just about every corner of the state this week. These 18-hole qualifying events featuring fields of public golfers took place at Westover Municipal Golf Course, Crystal Lake Golf Club, Captains Golf Course (Port), and Gardner Municipal Golf Course.
The Championship Proper will take place at Cyprian Keyes Golf Club in Boylston for the first time July 29-30. Entries to this event are open to any amateur golfers who have an active Mass Golf Membership at a public golf course, a course/club that provides playing opportunities for the general public seven days a week, and a Handicap Index® not exceeding 8.0 (at the time of registration).
On Monday at Westover, site of the 2021 Mass Amateur Public Links, Galen Fowles (Northampton Country Club) shook off a pair of double bogeys at the start by rolling in four consecutive birdies to close the front nine to shoot even-par 72. Lee Albertson (Tekoa Country Club) added a pair of eagles to shoot a 72 as well, and fellow Tekoa member Bryce Piemonte advanced with a 73. Luke Grebinar (Green Hill Muni Golf Course) rallied back from a 5-over 41 on the front nine to shoot 2-under 34 on the back and qualify at 3-over.
Due to the extreme heat on Tuesday at Crystal Lake, the qualifier was divided into two separate 9-hole qualifiers, with the top six scorers and ties advancing to the Championship Proper from each qualifier.
On the front nine, Riley Reardon (MIAA), Mike Hersey (The Meadow at Peabody), Gregory Peters (George Wright Golf Course), and Bob Blackmar (Wachusett Country Club) all shot even-par, with Reardon finishing with a birdie on the par-3 9th. With a birdie on the 18th, 61-year-old Salisbury resident Mike Walsh (The Tour) led the way with a 1-under 35, and Owen Picariello (The Meadow at Peabody) got through with a 36.
On Wednesday at the Captains Golf Course (Port), Ben Jenkins (Barnstable Golf) carded the best score at 2-under 70, with a pair of eagles, including on the closing 18th. Fellow Barnstable golf members Bobby Harrington (74), Dennis Konary (76), and Ian Lowe (77) also advanced, as did former Massachusetts Senior Amateur winner Joe Walker (Dennis Pines Golf Course), who also shot 77.
On Thursday at Gardner Municipal Golf Course, a pair of Cyprian Keyes members led the way among 16 qualifiers. Joe Macaulay shot a bogey-free 3-under-par 68 with three birdies, while Michael Dinoia made five birdies for a 71. He tied Matthew Small (Butter Brook Golf Club), who shot 1-under on the front nine. Geoffrey Holt (Red Tail Golf Club) nearly shot par the entire round, with just one bogey on the 4th for a 1-over 73. Thomas Williams (George Wright Golf Course) made it above the cutline at 3-over with a clutch birdie on the 17th.
