NORTON, Massachusetts – Qualifying for the 2021 Mass Junior Amateur kicked off this week with a total of four different qualifying events spread across two days. A total of 29 players earned their opportunity to compete in the Junior Amateur, taking place August 2-5 at Indian Pond Country Club in Kingston.
The final two qualifying events will take place on June 28. Entries are open to amateur golfers who have an active Mass Golf/GHIN Handicap and who have reached their 14th birthday and will not reach their 19th birthday by midnight on August 5, 2021.
Three players advanced at Agawam Municipal Golf Course on Monday. Gunnar Moore (Country Club of Greenfield) led the 11-player field by shooting a 4-over-par 75. Moore birdied his first hole of the day and picked up another birdie on hole 16 to finish at the top of the leaderboard. Peter Wurszt (CC of Wilbraham) and Benjamin Haddad (Country Club of Pittsfield) each shot shoot 7-over-par to earn the other two qualifying spots.
Over at Harmon Golf Club in Rockland, Reese Jensen (Duxbury Yacht Club) earned medalist honors and led a group of eight total qualifiers from the event. Jensen finished his round shooting a 1-over-par 71 and he had key birdies late on holes 13 and 14 to hold on for medalist honors. Finishing just behind Jensen was Matthew Weber (Cohasset Golf Club), who shot 2-over with two birdies total.
Three players all made the cut shooting 10-over 80: Jack Waldner (Boston Golf Club), Ryan Whitehead (Charter Oak Country Club) and Joseph Berggren (Youth on Course/Mass Golf).
In the final qualifier Monday, Wyatt Barlage (Nehoiden Golf Club) shot 1-under-par 69 to earn medalist honors at Milton-Hoosic Golf Club. Barlage had a strong front nine with 3 birdies to get out to a solid start. Two more birdies on holes 11 and 18 were enough to finish under par.
Kevin McGough (The Captains Course) carded three birdies on his way to shooting 1-over and earning solo second-place. Among other qualifiers, one player shot 3-over, two players shot 4-over and three players shot 5-over on their way into securing a spot in the Championship Proper.
In the lone qualifier on Tuesday, Colin Spencer (Cummaquid Golf Club) shot a 3-under-par 69 to run away with medalist honors. Spencer had four birdies for the round, including consecutive birdies on holes 6, 7 and 8. The second closest finisher behind him was Aidan Odonovan (Cummaquid Golf Club) who shot 1-under 71.
