11 Earn Spots In Mass Open Championship in Windy Woodland Showdown

Eleven golfers punched their ticket to the 115th Massachusetts Open, emerging from the final qualifying showdown Monday at a windswept Woodland Golf Club with spots in next month’s signature championship in hand. The event was rescheduled from its originally scheduled day of May 5.

The remaining spots will be filled based on the Alternate List, as all players in the pool have been randomly selected and ranked by number as alternates. To view alternate list, CLICK HERE

The Championship Proper will take place June 10-12 at Sacconnesset Golf Club in Falmouth. Sacconnesset is a Rees Jones-designed course first opened for play on June 3, 2007, and is recognized as the last new course to be built on raw land on Cape Cod. The club previously hosted the Mass Open in 2017.

A few weeks after Jimmy Jones (Tampa, FL) won a playoff at Crumpin-Fox Club to advance to U.S. Open Final Qualifying, the Canadian-born pro took medalist honors with four birdies to shoot even-par 72.

The remaining 10 qualifiers were Massachusetts-based amateurs, including Ryan Derosier (Olde Scotland Links) with a 73 and Evan Regan, a 16-year-old junior at King Philip High School, with a 74. Regan started his round with birdies on two of the first three holes. Jay Sherwood (Marshfield Country Club), a fellow junior at B.C. High, was among five golfers to shoot 75.

Woodland member Cooper Griffin, who shot a 6-under 65 in the final round of the Ouimet Memorial Tournament, went 3-over on his opening two holes, but righted the ship with birdies on the next three holes, earning his spot with a 75. Like Jones, Griffin also advanced to U.S. Open Local Qualifying at Crumpin-Fox.  Fellow Woodland member Conor McCormack rallied back by shooting 2-under on the back nine, including a birdie on the 17th.

John Hadges (Thorny Lea Golf Club), 64, a two-time Mass Amateur champion, got off to a solid start but needed a par on the 600-yard, par-5 9th to qualify on the number with a 76.
