STERLING, Massachusetts (July 14, 2026) — In the week following the 118th Massachusetts Amateur Championship at their home course, Tracy Welch and Bradford Adams of Winchester Country Club took home this year’s Mother-Son Modified Scotch Tournament on Tuesday at Sterling National Country Club.
Opening their day on the par-three 5th hole of the shotgun start, Adams teed up first, acing it. “I was sitting there looking like, oh, that looks pretty good, that could end up like, well, not just pretty good. I was like, oh, no, it’s great. Probably gonna be 2 or 3 feet, and then it went in, and I kind of went crazy. I was running around the tee box.”
From their opening tee shot, they carded quite a round with eight birdies or better. Their two-under 69 would win not only the Junior division, but also the Overall as well.
After a perfect start, Adams and Welch would double-bogey the par-four sixth, bringing them back to even par. After that, a sequence of bogeys then birdies would run from their 9th to 16th holes (holes 12 through 1) would define their round. “We made a ton of super long putts,” Welch said. “It wasn’t the world’s greatest 69. We kind of had a couple of times where he (Adams) came up short, and I (Welch) zinged my chip by, so then we had to two-putt.”

Tracey Welch is no stranger to parent-kid events, as she has won the Mother-Daughter event eight times between her daughters, Amanda and Victoria. She also won the event with her mother, Jane Welch, in 1998 and 1999.
When asked about her history with Adams in this tournament, she added, “I don’t know if they still have it, but six years ago when Bradford was 12, we played in the Mother-Son, and we were in the junior-junior division. It was the 1st time we played, and we won it, and then every other year since then, we haven’t been able to play in it, because it conflicted with either our family vacation or Bradford was at camp, and so when I saw the dates this year, I was like, we’re doing this”
As for the other divisions, Marjorie and Robert Kilgus (Juniper Hill Golf Course, USGA/Mass Golf GC) took home the Senior Net Division with an impressive 10-under (61). Michelle and Jesse Morgan (Amherst Golf Club, Northfield Golf Club) would tie back-to-back champions Loren and Peter Le Gassick (The Kittansett Club) with even-par 71s.
The remaining Mass Golf Team & Parent Child events will take place throughout the next two months. On July 22, the Mother Daughter / Member Junior Modified Scotch Tournament will take place at Cyprian Keyes. The Father Son Modified Scotch is set for July 22 and 23 also at Cyprian Keyes, followed by the Family Scramble Tournament on August 3 at Blackstone National.
