Qualifying for the Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship kicked off this week at the Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds, with 95 competitors vying for one of at least 15 guaranteed spots in the fall championship at Worcester Country Club this September.
The Championship Proper begins September 29 at Worcester Country Club, which is hosting the event for the first time since 1967. The club has also famously hosted the 1925 U.S. Open, 1927 Ryder Cup, and 1960 U.S. Women’s Open.
Entries for the event are open to amateur golfers age 55+ as of Sept. 29, 2025, who have an active Mass Golf Membership and a Handicap Index® not exceeding 8.0.
Grabbing the first two spots in qualifying were Gene Gonzalez (Charles River Country Club) and Brendan Brazel (South Shore Country Club), who earned their spots by shooting an even-par score of 71. On their heels and tied for third was William Frain (Charter Oak Country Club), Brian Robbins (Pleasant Valley Country Club), and Ed Maher (Boston Golf Club), carding a 1-over-par 72.
Brian Buckley (Pocasset Golf Club), Richard Longuiel (The Ridge Club), Jack Bohman (Eastward Ho!), Nicholas Bollas (Charles River Country Club), Frank Glancy (Cranberry Valley Golf Course), and Chris Tufts (The Club at New Seabury) each grabbed a spot on the leaderboard and a ticket to Worcester with a 2-over-par 73.
Tying for 12th place, and earning the last few qualifying spots with a 3-over-par 74, were Ronald Laverdiere (Crumpin-Fox Club), Charles Tyner (Maynard Golf Course), Dave Schreiner (The Cape Club), Sean Doherty (Hyannisport Club), and Kim Frenz (Kings Way Golf Club).
